Here are a couple of recent examples of how your donation dollars are being put to good use.
After battling Stage IV neuroblastoma (tumours of the nerve tissue) and undergoing treatment for four years, an 11 year old boy and his family flew to Disneyland on November 21st for a week of fun and relaxation.
The dream application arrived at the Help Fill A Dream office on November 13th with an urgent request to 'make the dream come true' within two days. This child will continue his treatment soon and he and his family wanted to visit Disneyland prior to that. Everyone involved in making his dream a reality pulled out all the stops to finalize the arrangements within 24 hours.
Another 5 year old boy has a rare syndrome and is now on full life support and in end stage liver failure. He suffers from chronic pain and requires special medication which is not covered by Pharmacare. His mom is a single mom with very limited resources and cannot afford to purchase the medication that is essential for her son's well being and comfort. We are assisting this family through our financial aid program.
On November 11th, 10 kids from the Victoria General Hospital were flown to Vancouver, picked up in a limousine and whisked away to a special effects studio for a hands on introduction to special effects makeup and creature animatronics. From there, they went to a Canucks game, sat in Marcus Naslund's private box, and had the opportunity to meet both Trevor Linden and Marcus Nasland. It was a dream come true for those kids.
It is both a privilege and pleasure to make these dreams a reality, as well as to alleviate some of the strain, both emotionally and financially, that having a sick child brings. Your continued support ensures that we are able to displace some of the anxiety and replace it with hope and assist these families during a stressful time.
