Six-year old Coen was born with bi-lateral hydro nephrosis (non-fucntioning kidneys) and spent the first three years of his life hooked up to a dialysis machine 12 hours a day. When a kidney transplant in 2013 freed him from dialysis, he and his family started planning some time away together – happy and healthy after so many challenging years.
Thanks to Help Fill a Dream Coen, now six, his parents, and his older brother have just returned from Aulani, a Disney resort on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. It was the Saanich family’s dream to have several relaxing days together just to enjoy each other and have fun with no medical worries or stress. Coen has always loved swimming and Mickey Mouse so Aulani was the perfect vacation spot.
In addition to lots of time at the pool, Coen and his family visited Pearl Harbour and swam with turtles at an area beach. It was the trip of a lifetime, according to Coen’s mom Tanis, and with a future of unknowns, an opportunity to live happily in the moment.
